24-Hour Strike To Impact Port Of Montreal
Montreal port will stop operations on Sunday 27th October, due to a 24-hour strike being called by the Port of Montréal Longshoremen’s Union.
The Maritime Employers Association (MEA) has received notice that the action will start at 7am Sunday and workers will return at 6:59 on Monday. Port operations are already being hampered by an ongoing overtime strike, which has been in place for over two weeks.
The impact of the strike is likely to be felt longer than its 24 hours. Clearing backlogs without overtime will almost certainly be slow, which will therefore mean some congestion.
There seems to be no sign of an end to the dispute, with the MEA saying this week “after 35 mediation meetings over 15 months, it is clear that the parties are still at square one and at an impasse”.
