Baltimore Bridge Collapses From Containership Collision

A Baltimore bridge has been destroyed in the early hours of this morning after a containership struck one of its columns, leading to several vehicles plunging into the river.

The Singapore-flagged vessel ‘Dali’ collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge at at around 1.30am local time this morning and up to 20 people are understood to have fallen into the river with their vehicles.

The bridge forms part of a major road into the city and the incident has been described as a ‘mass casualty event’. A multi agency rescue operation is currently underway.

The vessel left Baltimore port enroute to Colombo and collided with one of the bridge’s columns around 45 minutes later. We very much hope for a successful rescue operation and out thoughts are with all of those involved and their families.

The ship lost power and steering, but the crew managed to notify authorities of the potential disaster and further traffic entering the bridge was stopped just before the collision, which is believed to have saved many lives.

The below video shows the tragic moment the bridge collapsed.
