China Covid Cases Lead To Disruption Concerns
Covid cases are on the rise again in Shanghai and with mass testing underway concerns of more lockdown measures are rising.
The number of new cases has risen to over 50 for four days in a row, it had reduced to single digits, and China is well known for its zero-tolerance approach to the virus.
Shanghai has only been out of lockdown for five weeks, but the concern is that rolling lockdowns may continue for the rest of the year, which will undoubtedly result in further congestion and disruption at the world’s busiest port.
It is not just Shanghai that could be facing rolling lockdowns as around 30 million people in China remain under some form of Covid restrictions. Currently, the hot spots include Henan province and the southern port city of Guangzhou, which has also restarted mass testing.
Ports throughout the country are having issues with delays and congestion right now, with some being recently affected by fog and typhoons. Qingdao, Ningbo, Shenzhen and Hong Kong are amongst those negatively impacted by bad weather.
With these issues continuing to slow down volume during peak season, it is perhaps likely that carriers will respond with blanked sailings.
