Container Ship Captain Arrested After Collision
The captain of a container ship has been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter after the rescue search for a missing crew member was unsuccessful and called off.
The Portuguese-flagged ‘Solong’ collided with the oil tanker ‘Stena Immaculate’ on Monday off of the UK’s East Yorkshire coast, with one member of the containership’s crew now presumed dead.
The oil tanker, carrying 220,000 barrels of jet fuel in 16 cargo tanks, was anchored in the North Sea when it was struck by the Solong off the coast of Hull, causing a series of explosions on board and releasing jet fuel into the sea.
The fire aboard the oil tanker has been put out, but smoke can still be seen rising from the containership.
The remaining 36 crew members, understood to be Russian, American and Filipino, have been safely taken to shore. The containership is damaged beyond repair and is expected to sink in the North Sea.
