Deadly Container Explosion in Bangladesh

A series of explosions near the port of Chittagong has led to over 40 deaths in Bangladesh’s second largest city since the weekend.

The blasts are believed to have been caused by 16 containers of Hydrogen Peroxide, which were in a depot outside of the port awaiting shipment.

The first explosion happened around 9pm on Saturday night, which was followed by a catastrophic fire that raged for over two days, leading to more than 200 people being hospitalised.

This devastating event is one of a series of dangerous goods related incidents that have plagued global logistics during the past 2-3 years. This includes numerous ship fires and the 2020 Beirut Port explosion, which killed over 200 people in Lebanon.

Atlantic Pacific offer our deepest sympathies for the victims, friends and families affected by this tragic incident in Chittagong.
