EU Confirms Timetable For New Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)
The European Commission has officially confirmed that the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) will proceed on schedule. The new framework will apply from 30 December 2025 for large organisations, with micro and small enterprises following a year later, on 30 December 2026.
Designed to prevent deforestation linked to global trade, the EUDR will ensure that all products placed on or exported from the EU market are both deforestation-free and legally sourced. The regulation covers major commodities such as beef, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soy, natural rubber, and wood, marking a significant step in the EU’s broader sustainability and climate agenda.
To allow a smooth transition, the Commission has set out a six-month adjustment period for large businesses. During this window – ending 30 June 2026 – companies and authorities can finalise their due diligence processes before full enforcement begins.
Among the latest refinements to the regulation:
Simplified reporting will be available to smaller operators based in low-risk countries, who may submit a single compliance declaration rather than full due diligence documentation.
A new category of “downstream operators” – including manufacturers, distributors, and retailers handling already compliant goods -must maintain product traceability but are exempt from submitting full due diligence reports.
Businesses can also choose to submit annual due diligence statements, helping to streamline administration.
