EU Deforestation Regulation Delayed By A Year

The European Union has officially delayed the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), granting companies an additional year to prepare for its wide-ranging sustainability obligations.

The regulation, which was originally set to apply to large businesses this month, will now take effect on December 30, 2026. Smaller firms will benefit from an even longer transition period, with micro and small enterprises required to comply from June 30, 2027. During this time, the EU will continue to review the legislation to address practical challenges raised by industry.

In parallel with the postponement, the European Commission has launched a simplification review. This initiative aims to reduce regulatory uncertainty and ease the burden on Food & Beverage supply chains that are already facing rising costs while trying to remain competitive.

Introduced in June 2023, the EUDR is a major environmental policy designed to curb global deforestation linked to EU consumption. Its core objective is to ensure that certain goods placed on or exported from the EU market are not associated with deforestation or forest degradation that occurred after 2020. By doing so, the regulation seeks to limit biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions tied to land-use change.

The law applies to timber and six agricultural commodities: cattle, cocoa, coffee, oil palm, rubber, and soy, along with derived products such as beef, furniture, and chocolate. To comply, companies must prove that products are deforestation-free, legally produced in their country of origin, and supported by a due diligence statement confirming full compliance with EUDR requirements.

While the EUDR is already legally in force, mandatory compliance has now been deferred, giving businesses crucial time to adapt their sourcing and reporting systems.
