Fatal Cargo Aircraft Accident Disrupts Miami Airport
A cargo aircraft accident at Miami International Airport on Sunday has tragically resulted in the loss of at least five lives and caused short-term disruption to flight operations.
An Amazon Prime Air Boeing 767-300 freighter, operated by 21 Air, overran a runway while landing after a flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The aircraft struck vehicles on the ground, causing a fire and a major emergency response. A further five people were injured.
Airport operations were suspended immediately after the incident, while emergency services attended the scene and dealt with a fuel leak. Two of Miami International Airport’s four runways had reopened by Sunday evening, allowing a partial recovery of flight activity. The cause of the accident is now being investigated by the US National Transportation Safety Board.
Miami is one of the Americas’ most important airfreight hubs, particularly for cargo moving between the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean. As well as dedicated freighter services, the airport handles substantial volumes of cargo travelling in the holds of passenger aircraft, making disruption there relevant to a wide range of international supply chains.
While no prolonged cargo disruption has been confirmed at this stage, the temporary airport closure and reduced runway availability may result in short-term delays, diversions and pressure on aircraft rotations. Ground handling operations and onward connections could also take time to return fully to normal.
APGL will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates where developments may affect customers’ shipments. Please contact our team if you have urgent or time-sensitive cargo moving through Miami or the wider Americas region.
