Mega Ship Refloated After Euro Grounding
A container mega-ship was refloated in the early hours of this morning after spending 2 days grounded near a German port.
The 20,568 teu ‘Mumbai Maersk’ grounded just north of the German island of Wangerooge on Wednesday, as it approached Bremerhaven port.
Prior to this morning’s high tide, numerous attempts had been made to float the vessel and they had all failed. Extra tugs were deployed this morning and the vessel was finally freed to continue its journey.
The incident stirred memories of last year’s Suez Canal blockage, when the Ever Given run aground and positioned itself across the canal. However, this time around the vessel was not situated in a main shipping lane.
Undoubtedly, there will be delays for customers with cargo on board the ship, which does not call directly at the UK. Early indications suggest that the hull was intact and not breached, but we expect the vessel to be inspected further at port.
