New UK Border Model Set For January 2024

The government released a new outline for border controls last week, which include new security measures and the delayed sanitary and phytosanitary goods model.

Following the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union, new import and export procedures have been in place since 2021. However, the government held off from imposing more complex controls, and has postponed deadlines several times.

The Border Target Operating Model (BTOM) was eventually published in April this year as a draft version. After feedback and consultation, the final version has just been released and is set to be phased in from January 2024.

The first quarter of next year looks set to be a busy and transformative time for international traders and logistics providers. As well as the introduction of BOTM and sanitary and phytosanitary controls, full customs controls for non-qualifying Northern Ireland goods are also being introduced in January, and the deadline for export declarations to move from CHIEF to CDS is March 30th.

This is due to be followed in April by the implementation of checks on medium risk animal products, plants, plant products and high risk food (and feed) of non-animal origin from the EU.

Atlantic Pacific are ahead of schedule in our preparation and are monitoring developments closely. The full government BOTM document can be found HERE.
