Panama Canal: What A Difference A Couple Of Years Make

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has initiated a preventative water discharge after Gatún Lake exceeded its maximum operational level following days of heavy rainfall, underscoring a dramatic reversal of fortune for one of the world’s most vital trade arteries.

The move is designed to protect canal infrastructure and nearby communities, as elevated surface runoff from tributary rivers continues to push water levels higher. Gatún Lake, the primary freshwater source for the canal’s lock system, plays a critical role not only in vessel transits but also in regional flood management, making careful water level control essential.

The development stands in stark contrast to the severe drought that gripped the canal throughout much of 2023 and 2024.

During that period, water shortages – intensified by a strong El Niño weather pattern – forced the ACP to slash daily vessel transits from a typical average of 39 ships to as few as 20. The resulting bottlenecks rippled across global supply chains, with long queues forming at both ends of the canal. In extreme cases, shipowners paid up to $1 million in daily auction bids to skip the queues.

The canal went through a strong recovery period in 2025, when improved rainfall enabled the canal to average 33 daily transits, up from 27 the previous year.

The shift from drought-stricken restrictions to water overflow within just two years highlights the impact of climate patterns on global shipping – and what a difference a couple of years can make.
