Port Congestion Intensifies As Asia Peak Season Builds

As Asia’s ocean freight peak season gathers pace, importers are once again facing growing disruption across major trade lanes, with port congestion adding to the challenges of vessel space and equipment availability.

Port congestion has become a significant challenge, particularly as delays in Asia begin to affect operations in North Europe. When vessels are delayed at origin, they can miss their planned berthing windows in Europe, creating a knock-on effect that compounds existing congestion at destination ports.

Recent adverse weather in the Far East, combined with capacity constraints and strong seasonal demand, has added further pressure to ports. These issues are contributing to delays that will seemingly remain a feature of the market throughout the peak season period.

Several key Asian export hubs are currently experiencing elevated congestion levels, with Shanghai and Ningbo among the most affected. At the same time, Northern Europe’s largest container ports are also under increasing operational strain, as delayed vessel arrivals coincide with already congested terminals and inland transport networks.

Rotterdam and Antwerp are reporting delays, with waiting times regularly extending to around four days. High yard utilisation, reduced crane availability, feeder delays and weather-related stoppages are all limiting operational fluidity.

According to a recent report, congestion across Europe and Asia has combined to leave around 3.4 million TEU of containership capacity queued at any one time.

Intensifying port congestion, capacity issues and equipment challenges serve as a reminder of the growing importance for importers to book shipments as early as possible, especially urgently required orders.

Atlantic Pacific continues to monitor developments closely and work tirelessly to mitigate supply chain disruption during this challenging peak season period.
