Rethinking the Everyday: When Containers Become Culture

We recently came across an inspiring exhibition in Shanghai that truly made us pause and reflect.

The Maison Margiela exhibition reimagines the everyday by using shipping containers to showcase the brand’s unconventional approach to fashion. The result is both striking and thought-provoking.

Founded in Paris in 1988, Maison Margiela has always stood apart, rooted in ideas of nonconformity and creative expression. At its core, the brand challenges traditional definitions of fashion, presenting it instead as a form of art.

While we saw the show in Shanghai, the event was a multicity exhibition that also unfolded across Beijing, Chengdu, and Shenzhen. Rather than consolidating content within a single venue, the company operates through fragmentation, where each city becomes a ‘folder’ dedicated to a specific code.

What makes this exhibition particularly compelling is its setting. Shipping containers—objects we encounter daily—have been transformed into a public gallery space. Within these industrial structures, decades of design are displayed in a way that offers an entirely new perspective, all while using a familiar structure.

In our world, containers are typically associated with movement, efficiency, and global trade. They are the backbone of logistics, quietly enabling the flow of goods across continents. Yet, exhibitions like this remind us that they are more than just functional units—they are symbols of connection, embedded in almost every aspect of modern life.

It’s easy to overlook what is familiar. But sometimes, the greatest value comes from seeing it differently.

At Atlantic Pacific, containers are at the heart of everything we do. Projects like this serve as a powerful reminder of just how far their impact can reach—not only across industries, but into culture, creativity, and beyond.
