Shanghai: Impact Reaching Other Airports
Shanghai has entered its fourth week of lockdown, which is creating knock-on affects and backlogs for many other Chinese airports.
Despite recent attempts to ease the lockdown, the number of cases in the city have continued to rise. Shanghai Airport (PVG) has strict controls on vehicles entering and many flights and services remain suspended.
While much of the local export traffic has significantly reduced, the airport is an international hub for many regions that are not heavily affected by Covid. It is this traffic that has diverted to other airports, such as Zhengzhou, Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
Congestion is leading to a shortage of airline pallets for Chinese exports and some airports have run out of capacity to store cargo.
Meanwhile, capacity from Hong Kong is still being affected by local restrictions, which is operating about 30% down on pre-Covid levels.
