Strikes Ease at Key Northern European Ports, But Risks Remain

Strikes at two major Northern European ports appear to have subsided for now, though both remain at risk of renewed walkouts.

Industrial action at Antwerp and Rotterdam has disrupted port operations, putting further strain on fragile supply chains and worsening the congestion that has challenged European shipping throughout the year.

In Antwerp, marine pilots have ended their work-to-rule measures until October 24th, which had been limiting operations to between 08:00 and 17:00. Since all vessels require mandatory pilotage, the action had led to significant waiting times for entry into the port.

Port operations were also affected by a nationwide strike over pension reforms, which led to a operations being suspended earlier this week.

Meanwhile, in Rotterdam, dockworkers began striking on October 8th amid a dispute over pay and working conditions. Although a court order temporarily forced them back to work on October 13th, the strike could legally resume tomorrow if no agreement is reached.

As two of Europe’s busiest and most congested ports, disruptions in Rotterdam and Antwerp have already created backlogs, delays, and seem likely to further impact global shipping schedules.

Atlantic Pacific continues to closely monitor the situation. For tailored support with supply chain strategy or contingency planning, please contact our team.
