This Month’s Indian Port Strike Called Off
**28th August Update** Strike has now been called off after a five-year deal has been agreed.
Original Post 15th August:
Indian port workers are set to go on strike indefinity across the nation from August 28th, demanding immediate resolution of their wage, allowance and pension demands.
The decision came at the end of the two-day meeting held at V.O.C. Port in Thoothukudi last week, when the National Coordination Committee of Port Workers announced the industrial action after prolonged negotiations with the Ministry of Shipping.
The previous deal expired in 2021 and no agreement has been reached during the following thirty-one months, with unions heavily criticising the Ministry’s “illogical and illegal guidelines” for stalling negotiations.
India has been witnessing a fair amount of ocean freight disruption in recent weeks. However, unless a settlement can be found ahead of the planned strike date, disruption to and from the country is likely to get significantly worse.
