UK Included In Stink Bug Seasonal Measures
The UK and China have recently been identified as emerging risk countries for the upcoming brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) season.
The season will run from 1st September 2023 until 30th April 2024. During this period ocean freight goods that are imported into Australia and New Zealand, from over 40 countries worldwide, will be subject to random inspections.
During the season exporters are required to ensure that high risk goods are properly BMSB treated with Methyl Bromide or Sulfuryl Fluoride.
High risk goods include wooded material, ceramic products, glass and glassware, tools, aluminium and articles thereof, machinery and equipment, vehicles and parts.
Australia and New Zealand are largely aligned with their BMSB regulations as the insect poses a serious biohazard threat to both countries.
The bugs often invade vehicles, homes, and factories in large numbers during autumn, looking for shelter over winter. In addition to decimating crops, these pests secrete a pungent smelling chemical when threatened that can cause a burning sensation with skin contact or instigate allergic reactions.
