Undeclared Dangerous Goods Blamed for Incheon Port Container Explosion

South Korean authorities have confirmed that a shipping container that exploded at Incheon Port in late August was found to be carrying large quantities of undeclared dangerous goods materials, including LPG cylinders and butane canisters.

The blast occurred on August 28th at the Incheon Hanjin Container Terminal. Although the Maersk container was officially documented as holding used vehicles, investigators later uncovered combustible items concealed among the cars – goods that should have been subject to stringent dangerous-goods handling and storage procedures.

The explosion damaged surrounding containers and terminal equipment, but no serious injuries were reported. Terminal operations were briefly halted while emergency crews and mobile cranes cleared debris and secured the site.

Officials emphasised that the misdeclaration of hazardous cargo created unnecessary risks for port personnel and infrastructure. They also noted that the consequences could have been far more severe had the container been loaded onto a vessel at sea.

Undeclared and misdeclared dangerous goods continue to pose a major challenge in global logistics. Despite tightened regulatory controls, stepped-up inspections, and harsher penalties, such violations persist and have contributed to a series of shipboard fires and port-side incidents in recent years.

The Atlantic Pacific team is fully trained in dangerous-goods handling and offers compliant, end-to-end solutions for the safe movement of these cargo types across air, sea, rail, and road. For more information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
